Xirlink Inc has introduced its new Video Phone videoconferencing product that its says is the first to deliver audio and compression over the Universal Serial Bus in addition to video. The key advantage of using the Bus connection to the PC is that is enables up to 12Mbps bandwidth for higher quality real time video image capture, compared to 1Mbps using a serial port. In addition, delivering audio over the Universal Serial Bus eliminates the need for cuts the cost of videoconferencing by removing the need for a microphone and headphone plug in while compression over the Bus allows for better quality video and a higher picture resolution. Delivering video over the Universal Serial Bus eliminates the need for the video capture board. The Xirlink Video Phone ships with digital video camera, videoconferencing software and Universal Serial Bus cable. Xirlink incorporates its own ViCE (Video Compression Engine) technology to compress data. The Xirlink Video Phone will list at $149 and be out by the end of September. Xirlink is a San Jose-based manufacturer of consumer multimedia products for the PC industry.
