Quest swoops for RemoteScan

Deal should help with document management in virtual environments

By Steve Evans

Management firm Quest Software has snapped up RemoteScan, a company that deals with scanning and imaging applications in virtual desktop environments.

Financial details were not disclosed.

RemoteScan’s technology works across Windows Terminal Server, Quest’s vWorkspace platform, Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp, as well as all other virtualised RDP, ICA and LAN network environments, the firms said.

The Missoula, Montana-based firm’s products support scanners and imaging devices in virtualised Windows desktop environments and are generally used document management, and electronic medical record (EMR) and electronic health record (her) fields, making it particularly strong in the healthcare and finance markets.

"The addition of RemoteScan’s technology to the Quest desktop virtualisation portfolio significantly increases our strategic importance in this market," said Doug Garn, Quest’s CEO.

"As the leading provider of scanning and imaging solutions for virtual desktop environments, RemoteScan has an impressive base of over 20,000 customers," Garn added. "Also, their successful high volume, online sales model gives Quest new, high speed routes into the desktop virtualisation marketplace."

RemoteScan’s customers include American Red Cross, Walgreens, Northrop Grumman and Bank of America.

Quest Software recently revealed a 9.9% hike in revenue, up to $188.2m from just over $171m a year ago. Net income however dropped 77% to $3.6m, well below analyst estimates. Acquisitions and new hires contributed to the fall in profits.

Recent acquisitions include a $55m deal for BakBone Software, a provider of data protection, deduplication, replication, disk-based and tape backup and recovery software. The company also opened a new service centre in Ireland earlier this year.
