SCOTTISH DISK NEWCOMER CALLUNA TECHNOLOGY SET TO SHIP 170Mb 1.8″ PCMCIA DRIVES FROM SEPTEMBER

By CBR Staff Writer

Glenrothes, Fife-based Calluna Technology Ltd is shipping evaluation samples of its 170Mb PCMCIA Type III compatible 1.8 hard disk drives with full production planned in late August or early September. The UK-owned company has already been shipping 130Mb drives since March and 105Mb drives since last November and now has plans to ship small quantities of 210Mb drives as of December. The firm designs and manufactures the credit card size hard disks in Scotland and is selling them OEM to customers and distributors worldwide. It now has a sales office in San Jose, California. The 170Mb unit supports sustained data transfer rates of up to 4Mb per second with an average seek time of 16mS. Calluna now has production capacity of just over 500,000 units a year – up from 50,000 in December 1992 (CI No 2,073) but says it could double that easily if necessary. Currently employing 42 people – up from 17 in 1992, it is looking for new offices and staff near Chard in Somerset where it has outgrown its present premises. European sales manager Steve Sharp says that in the past six months demand has shot up, with peaks in November and March. Calluna is financed by a group of private investors although it does not divulge full details for reasons the managing director Norman White says will become apparent in near future, except to say that 3i Plc is no longer one of those investors.
