The two announced consortia that will bid for the second pan European digital cellular telephone franchise for West Germany line Racal Telecommunications Plc and British Telecommunications Plc up against each other, and Baby Bells BellSouth Corp and Nynex Corp are also glaring at each other in the rival consortia: Racal and BellSouth are in the Bayerische Motoren Werke AG-Veba AG-led consortium with Compagnie Financiere pour le Radiotelephone SA, Cofira, while British Telecom and Nynex are in the rival team led by Daimler-Benz AG with electricity utility Rheinisch-Westfa?lisches Elektrizita?tswerk AG; Siemens AG says it would like to bid, but as a manufacturer doesn’t think it will be allowed to; the other franchise has already been awarded to the Deutsche Bundespost.
