Westborough, Massachusetts-based Proteon Inc has launched an Ethernet switching product costing less than $100 per port, which it claims is little more than the cost of using 10Base-T Shared local area network hubs, and a Token Ring switch. The Client Server eXchange, CSX, 900E is based on a single workstation 10Base-T repeater-switching fabric that includes 24 integral 10/100Mbps ports for local area connections or links to high-end servers. Two integral 10/100 auto-sensing switching ports provide a dedicated connection to servers, high-speed daisy-chain connections, high-speed backbone connections or a low-speed shared local area network connection. The 900E is targeted at small offices or workgroups. Also new is the CSX 901T Token Ring switch, designed for use in workgroup, building or campus backbone environments. It features 12 Token Ring ports and an expansion slot; each port has a dedicated 4/16Mbps bandwidth path for interconnecting client workstations, servers, concentrators or other switches. It is supplied with full duplex technology as standard, thus generating an effective bandwidth of 32Mbps, according to the company. The suggested price for the 900E is $2,575, while the 901T will cost $10,500.
