MERCURY ADDS VOICE MESSAGING TO ITS SERVICES PORTFOLIO

By CBR Staff Writer

Mercury Communications Ltd has launched a voice messaging product which it claims is the first to operate internationally from the UK. Called Mercury 2700, the service mirrors electronic mail in allowing users to send and receive messages, but handles them as voicegrams rather than text messages. The service will also operate over mobile telephones and is expected to appeal to would-be communicators thwarted by the time zone problem. Mercury 2700 will be offered from the company’s Enhanced Services Division, which believes that there is a growing interest in voice messaging in the UK. The facility already has an enthusiastic following in the US where there is an estimated installed base of 12,000 systems.
