ICL Plc has been granted the first licence option for the Supertag product security device from British Technology Group Ltd, which was developed by the CSIR government laboratory in Pretoria, South Africa and acquired by the British Technology Group for licensing worldwide. It a similar concept to the barcode and is attached to the relevant article acting as an electronic label. Its circuit comprises a small chip containing an encoded number and printed aerial array and is read by a scanner emitting an illuminated radio beam over a distance of up to 16 feet. It will enable the customer to pass the trolley through a specially adapted archway at the supermarket checkout and receive an itemised bill in a few seconds without unloading any items.
