Determined not to be overshadowed by announcements across the water at DECWorld in Boston, DEC Europe this week announced two new DECstation micros sourced from Olivetti. The DS 325 80386 and DS 425 80486 boxes run either SCO Unix System V/386 (with Open Desktop optional), MS-DOS or OS/2, and fill the gap between DEC’s VT1000 X terminal and its low-end RISCstations. Prices start at UKP3,400 for the 25MHz 325 with 2Mb RAM and 100Mb hard disk, and UKP9,450 with 4Mb memory and 100Mb disk. DEC hopes the multi-user machines will get it new customers in the small businesses sector. DEC US gets its micros from Tandy, and has already launched 80386 systems over there. DEC also introduced a new laser printer – the DEClaser 2000 8ppm simplex/duplex Postscript model, with prices at from UKP2,800.
