Microsoft’s Bing records first monthly decline since launch, says StatCounter

Search engine's share declined to 3.25% from 3.58% globally

By CBR Staff Writer

Microsoft’s internet search engine Bing has reported a drop in its market share for the first time since its launch in May 2009, according to analysis conducted by web analytics firm StatCounter.

The firm’s research arm StatCounter Global Stats has found that Bing’s share of the US search market in September fell by over one percentage point to 8.51% from 9.64% in August, while Yahoo!’s share declined to 9.4% from 10.5%.

Google remained the leader of the US search market and it has increased by more than two percentage points to 80.08% in September from 77.83% in August, reported StatCounter.

Globally, Bing share declined slightly to 3.25% from 3.58%, while Yahoo fell to 4.37% from 4.84%. Google has reached the 90% mark with 90.54%, similar to its global market share a year earlier (90.53%).

Aodhan Cullen, CEO of StatCounter, said: The trend has been downwards for Bing since mid August. The wheels haven’t fallen off but the underlying trend must be a little worrying for Microsoft.

Earlier in September, a separate report from US internet monitoring firm ComScore has revealed that Bing’s US market share has increased from 8.9% in July to 9.3% in August.
