And they’re off! Vodafone races ahead with Aintree installation

Aintree flag poles get connected as part of investment plan.

By Alexander Sword

Vodafone UK has installed mobile technology in the flag poles at Aintree Racecourse ahead of the Grand National tomorrow.

The installation aims to provide punters the opportunity to stay connected at the race while retaining the building’s iconic appearance.

The move comes as part of a broader investment in its 3G and 4G networks in Liverpool. Although this figure was not disclosed, it is a double digit figure in the millions of pounds.

The money will be spent on strengthening its indoor and outdoor coverage across the city and providing faster mobile internet services to consumers and businesses. The operator also installed masts within the flagpoles at the Liverpool One Shopping Centre.

Vodafone eventually aims to bring mobile coverage to over 98 percent of the city’s population. Figures show that the average Liverpudlian currently uses around three terabytes of data per day.

This latest announcement is part of a plan to invest around £1 billion in networks and services nationwide this year. The company recently announced a similar regional investment in Wales, including rolling out 4G to Caerphilly, Cardiff, Connah’s Quay, Llanelli, Newport and Penarth.

Vodafone came second in an Ofcom study earlier this month comparing the speed of 4G offerings from the major networks. The list was topped by EE, with O2 coming in third and Three in fourth.

Jorge Fernandes, Chief Technology Officer for Vodafone UK, commented: "Our network improvements across Liverpool will ensure our customers enjoy stronger 3G coverage, whilst 4G is already helping local businesses react faster to the needs of their customers."
