COMPAQ’S ALTAVISTA TAKES 10% OF VIRAGE

By CBR Staff Writer

Compaq Computer Corp’s said Tuesday that through its AltaVista unit it has taken a nearly 10% stake in video and image search specialist Virage Inc. The two companies already had a relationship with AltaVista, having employed Virage technology in its AV Photo Finder service which was launched in October. As part of the deal, Virage said that its complete line of video search products has been licensed by the newly independent Alta Vista Co for integration with the AltaVista.com site. The equity investment from Compaq comes as part of Virage’s latest round of funding, which also included Hambrecht and Quist affiliate Adobe Ventures, Media Technology Ventures, Sutter Hill Ventures, Trinity Ventures and TTC Ventures.
