Compaq Computer Corp announced in Munich yesterday that it is on course to emerge this year as the leading challenger to IBM in the European personal computer market: in 1988, international markets surged 149%, or some three times the rate at which the markets grew as a whole, and its international turnover hit $809m, Europe contributing over 90%; it aims to increase its market share further and prepare for the Single Market by expanding its international organisations this year, adding significantly to its current complement of 1,200 people and moving into new sales and marketing offices in two of its major markets, France and the here in the UK, as well as laying plans for a new development in the Munich area for international headquarters staff and German subsidiary, and perhaps a second factory in Europe.
