Cable & Wireless Plc has again done its round of those islands separated from the rest of the world by antiquated analogue telephone networks and has this time trawled a contract with the Falkland Islands. The company has been awarded a UKP5.4m contract for a new digital network that will span the islands, and is due to come into operation in 1990, offering the Faklanders telex, facsimile and high-speed data services. Cable & Wireless, resident operator of the island’s international service since 1974, will foot half the installation bill. Cable & Wireless will operate the domestic service on an exclusive basis for thenext 22 years; it has also been granted an extension to the licence under which it handles international telecommunications.
