Although its European sibling ICL Plc is abandoning the Sun Microsystems Inc Sparc RISC, parent Fujitsu Ltd is pressing ahead with its five-year, $500m commitment to Sun’s chip technology signed back in May 1994. Yesterday it announced new systems based upon the 64-bit UltraSparc RISC in Japan yesterday, which it will sell worldwide. There are three models in the GP7000 series, the 200, 400 and 600, The entry-level system uses one 167MHz processor. The high-end model 600 comes with up to eight 250MHz UltraSparcs. SVP Yoshiro Yoshioka said the systems could be used as application, database or web servers. Basic configurations cost from $16,000 to $130,000 and up from September. Fujitsu has been selling Sparc-based systems for seven years.
