What is Windows?

The world's most popular desktop operating system.

Microsoft Windows is a range of operating systems across several different platforms, including personal computers, mobile and servers.

Windows is primarily known for its PC operating system, which has dominated the desktop market for decades.

According to a Stack Overflow survey, Windows currently has a 52 percent share of the desktop market. Windows 7 has a 22.5 percent share and Windows 10 has a 20.8 percent share.

A primary rival is OS X, Apple’s operating system for its line of Macintosh PCs. Apple has a 26.2 percent share. Linux kernel-based systems follow with 21.7 percent.
