Wikimedia is a not-for-profit organisation that maintains numerous wikis, a website or database developed by a community of users, on the Internet.
The best known of these wikis is Wikipedia, although Wikimedia actually maintains 16 wikis in total.
The Wikimedia foundation was founded in 2003 by Jimmy Wales as a way to fund Wikipedia and its sister projects through non-profit means. Wikipedia itself was launched in January 2001 by Wales and Larry Sanger.
The site has become one of the most popular sites on the Internet with 18 billion views and nearly 500 million unique visitors each month, as of February 2014.
