What is Tumblr?

Get to know a bit more about one of the most popular sites on the net.

By Joao Lima

Tumblr is a microblogging and social networking website.

Tumblr has become one of the world’s most popular blogging platforms. It is known for its microblogging style as the content is usually smaller than the one presented on other platforms like Blogger or WordPress.

Tumblr also has social networking functions, where users can like, share and comment on others’ content.

Users can follow other blogs and new posts will show on a main timeline with a global dashboard being always accessible to make it easier to navigate the site.

How’s it doing under Yahoo?

Tumblr ranks today as the 46th most visited website on the internet, according to Alexa.

It was launched in February 2007 by David Karp and is based in New York City, US. The team has only 386 people.

The company was acquired by Yahoo! In 2013 for $1.1bn, and hosts today almost 300 million blogs with posts accounting to 135 billion on an average of 45 new post a day.
