What is Sprint?

Sprint is one of four big mobile operators in the US.

Sprint is a US telecommunications company that provides wireless and Internet services.

As of 2017, Sprint is the fourth largest mobile network operator in the US.

Headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas, the company provides wireless voice, messaging and broadband services.

Sprint sits alongside Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, as one of the four major mobile operators in the US.

Subsidiaries include Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile USA, Clearwire.

 

Where did the name ‘Sprint’ come from?

Sprint’s earliest origins are with the Brown Telephone Company, first founded in 1899 to connect the rural area around Abilene, Kansas. The brand Sprint comes from 1983 when SPC and GTE merged under the name “GTE Sprint”.

In 2005, Sprint merged with Nextel Communications, becoming known as Sprint Nextel Corporation. The two were respectively the third and fifth largest mobile operators in the US.

In 2013, Japanese telecoms company SoftBank acquired 70 percent of the combined Sprint-Nextel, with Sprint remaining as a separate brand.
