SPEC stands for Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation, which was set up in order to assess the performance of computers.

As a result, this supervises computers so that they are operating to the correct standards.

The process of assessment is conducted through looking at the computers in comparison to similar PC models. This results in individual models being relatively assessed when comparing various chip and system architectures.

SPEC is a non-profit organization, headquartered at Gainesville in Virginia, United States. Test results that have been overseen and produced by SPEC are available on the corporation’s official website.

SPEC membership is open any company or entity interested and willing to commit to SPEC’s standards.

SPEC ‘Associates’ pay a reduced fee, and mainly includes universities. SPEC ‘Supporting contributors’ are invited to participate in development of a single benchmark and do not pay fees.

The benchmarks aim to test ‘real-life’ situations, with several testing Java scenarios.
