What is Shopify?

The ecommerce site has progressed quickly.

By James Nunns

Shopify is an ecommerce solution that is designed to let people set up an online store in order to sell their own goods.

Users are able to organise products, customise a storefront, accept credit card payments, track and respond to orders.

Founded in 2004 it was initially based on software that was written by its founders for their online snowboard store. The company decided to use the open source web application framework Ruby on Rails to build the snowboard store.

In 2009 Shopify launched an API platform, which allows developers to create applications for Shopify online stores and then sell them on the Shopify App Store, which it also launched in 2009.
