PPP means point-to-point protocol, providing direct connection between two nodes.

The acronym has also been used for pay per play and PowerPoint presentation in computer terms.

The data link layer within the PPP is responsible for transferring data between adjacent networks in a wide area network (WAN), or between nodes within the same local area network (LAN) segment.

Want to know when it was first used? See next page.

Link Control Protocol is another essential part of PPP, initiating and terminating connections as well as searching for errors in the configuration.

There are two variables of PPP: point-to-point protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) and point-to-point protocol over ATM (PPPoA).
