What is Ping?

Alongside download and upload speeds, Ping is an important measure of the speed of a network.

By Vinod

Ping is the reaction time of an internet connection, meaning how quickly a reply comes after sending a request.

The test to find out a Ping works by sending a packet to a specific address and waiting for a reply. It is often used when troubleshooting an internet connection.

Ping is measured in milliseconds. The lower the number, the better.

A fast ping is particularly crucial for users who need to respond quickly, such as in online video gaming.

Ping is one of the three main parameters of a connection, alongside download speed (how fast data comes down from the internet connection to your computer) and upload speed (how fast you send data via the connection).

There are lots of free Ping testing tools online.

Ping is named after a sonar technology that sends a sound pulse and measures how long it takes for the sound to bounce back to detect the distance of an object.
