What is Oracle?

Oracle made its name in databases and software, now it's moving to the cloud.

By James Nunns

Oracle Corporation is an American computer technology company, specialising in database software.

Oracle is one of the leading suppliers of software for information management, relational database products and more recently cloud products and services.

Oracle’s relational database became the first to support the Structured Query Language (SQL), which has now become an industry standard.

Founded in 1977 by Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates, the company offers numerous enterprise software products, cloud software and services, and supply chain management software.

What is Oracle’s nickname?

Mark Hurd and Safra Catz are the current co-CEOs of the company following Ellison’s decision to step down from the role in 2014.

Oracle is ranked by numerous analyst firms as having the most adopted database products of any vendor. This is partly due to the numerous capabilities that it offers and in the way that it tapped into the growth of structured data.

The company is now facing increased pressure in the database market as challengers appear which are better suited to dealing with unstructured data, which is growing at a much faster rate than structured.

Similar to how IBM is sometimes referred to as Big Blue, Oracle is sometimes referred to as ‘Redmond’ – a nickname originating from the company’s HQ in Redmond City, California.
