What is MRP?

Find out what MRP is.

By James Nunns

MRP, which stands for material requirements planning, is a computer based production planning and inventory control system.

MRP is in essence concerned with both production scheduling and inventory control.

This is one of the first software based integrated information systems that was designed to improve productivity for businesses.

The system is a sales forecast-based one that was used to schedule raw material deliveries and quantities, given assumptions of machine labour units required to fulfil a sales forecast.
