What is MPLS?

A method of assigning labels to packet.

By Alexander Sword

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a data transport technique designed to speed up flows of data.

Data packets are assigned labels, which allow nodes to direct traffic based on the contents of the label rather than having to examine the contents of the packet itself.

This means that any type of transport medium can be used to create end-to-end circuits, so there is no dependence on a particular OSI model data link layer technology.
