What is Microsoft Publisher?

Find out about the publishing program, Microsoft Publisher.

By Hannah Williams

Microsoft Publisher is a desktop publishing application.

In contrast to Microsoft Word, where the focus is on text composition and proofing, Microsoft Publisher is focused on the design and layout of pages.

Available in higher-end versions of Microsoft Office, Publisher can be used to create a wide variety of publications, from business cards and calendars, to newsletters and greetings cards.

Publisher is seen as an easy-to-use, entry-level desktop publisher and is targeted at individuals or small businesses who may not have design professionals at hand. More expensive alternatives in the market include Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress.
