What is iTunes?

The software behind the iPod.

By James Nunns

iTunes is a media player by Apple.

The iTunes software allows users to purchase, download, and manage music, videos, applications, and other media.

Released in 2001, the software originally provided a media player as a way for Macintosh users to manage their digital music collections and sync them to a device, the iPod.

In 2003 Apple added the ability to buy music from the iTunes store, which the company released for Windows in the same year.

This move helped to create the widespread adoption of iPods.

How does iCloud work with iTunes?

Continuing its evolution, Apple integrated iTunes with iCloud in 2011. This allows users to sync media, apps, and other data across multiple devices.

To access the iTunes Store, iTunes App Store, and iCloud, a user must have a username and password registered with Apple.

iTunes is capable of creating a virtual library that allows users to access and edit a song’s attributes, these attributes are known as metadata and are stored in a binary library file called iTunes Library.
