What is intranet?

Every company should have one.

By Joao Lima

Intranet is an internal and private enterprise network that allows employees to share and receive internal information about the business.

It is based on TCP/IP protocols and it is protected by a firewall to prevent unauthorised access to the network.

Intranets started to be first used in the early 1990s. The technology became widely adopted once in 1996, Microsoft launched a free web server.

On top of being a securer way to share company information with employees, intranets have other benefits such as the increased productivity.

Due to their easy use and speed, data can be found faster allowing employees to access the right applications and other services they need to carry out a job.

In addition, intranets also help to improve communication within a company, make business operations and management easier, help keep track of employees whereabouts, and so on.
