Internet.org is a partnership between Facebook and six other companies – Samsung, Ericsson, MediaTek, Opera Software, Nokia and Qualcomm. The project aims to give less developed countries affordable access to selected internet services.

Launched in 2013, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg coincided the launch with the release of a whitepaper he had written detailing his vision for the project. Stating that ‘connectivity is a human right’, Zuckerberg wrote that Internet.org was following in the steps of previous Facebook initiatives like Facebook Zero which aimed to improve internet access to people around the world.
