What is Gumtree?

Learn more about the site which allows you to turn your possessions into cash, Gumtree.

Gumtree is a British online classified advertising site.

The online classified ad site lets members of the public sell and buy various products.

Classified advertisements are either free or paid for, depending on the product category and the geographical market.

The site was launched in March 2000 by Michael Pennington and Simon Crookall as a local London classified advertising site, looking to connect Australians, New Zealanders and South Africans who need help with accommodation on arrival in London.

 

Which ecommerce giant bought Gumtree in 2005?

Ebay acquired Gumtree in May 2005 for an undisclosed fee.

Gumtree is now available in multiple countries such as the UK, Poland, Australia, Hong Kong and South Africa.

Gumtree is the number one classifieds site in the UK, Australia, South Africa and Singapore.

Although the sites largest category for ads is ‘goods for sale,’ the site is also home to around 200,000 car listings across the UK at any one time.

Gumtree also provides users with paid promotional options for increased advert visibility, despite its free listings service.
