One of Facebook’s broader missions is to expand internet connectivity to poorly served areas; for example, it has run the Free Basics scheme in India. However, some of these efforts have provoked controversy due to promoting some content over others in exchange for offering internet.

The publicly traded company held its first IPO in February 2012, with stock selling to the public taking place three months later. the company reached an initial market cap of $104bn.
