What is Blu-ray?

Here’s why the cinema industry loves Blue-ray.

Blu-ray, otherwise also known as Blue-ray Disc is a digital optical disc data storage.

It is a high-density optical disc and due to its capabilities, it has been widely adopted in the cinema industry to store HD films, as these are heavier in terms of the amount of data compared to older films.

A single-layer Blue-ray Disc can have as much as 25GB of storage space. A multi-layer has double the capacity and the BDXL format sees data storage capacity shoot up to 100GB and 128GB.

Blu-ray was deveped by the Blue-ray Disc Association and in addition to being used in cinema, it is used also for PlayStation games as well as Xbox and Wii.

Within the Blu-ray range, there are different types of discs. These include: Blu-ray (BD, BD-ROM), Blu-ray Disc recordable (BD-R, BD-RE), Blu-ray Disc Java (BD-J), High Fidelity Pure Audio (HFPA),and Total HD.
