Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is a protocol that maps an Internet Protocol (IP) address with the hardware address which is also recognised as Media Access Control (MAC) address. This is what is identified on the network.
An ARP cache is stored to link each hardware address and the relevant IP address to be able to generate the accurate conversion.
The process involves the conversion of the IP address into a physical address, like an Ethernet address.
