What is a motherboard?

Also known as a mainboard, logic board or system board.

A motherboard is the main printed circuit board found in a system or microcomputer.

The main function of a motherboard is to connect and allow communication between the many electronic compoentns in a system. For example, the CPU and memory.

Also called a main board, system board, baseboard or logic board, a motherboard usually consists of a central processor, memory controller, interface connectors and the chipsets input/output. The motherboard also includes peripherals such as interface cards, hard drives and other forms of persistant storage, among others.
