What is a microphone?

What microphones are and how they work in modern smartphone applications.

By Alexander Sword

A microphone is a device that converts sound into an electrical signal.

This signal can then be either recorded or amplified by another device.

Microphones are built into many devices such as telephones, two-way radios, as well as increasingly into computers.

The microphone on a smartphone is accessible to applications in ways never possible before. Most desktop computers also have microphones, but it is not so easily activated as with a smartphone.
