What is a CTO?

Depending on the organisation, the CTO could be second-in-command or not even on the board.

By Alexander Sword

A Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is the executive with responsibility for the technological policy of an organisation.

CTOs have taken on a prominent role since IT and digital technology began having significant impacts on the workings of organisations.

In the hierarchy of the boardroom, the CTO could answer directly to the CEO or report to the Chief Information Officer (CIO).
