What will be the next computer phenomenon from Amstrad Plc? Gossip doing the rounds suggests that the runaway success of the PC1512 Personalikes has encouraged the company to look very seriously at the lap-top Personalike market: the visibility of the new generation of liquid crystal diode displays is now regarded as reasonable to good, and although the market is only just beginning to generate really large volume sales, it has existed long enough to meet Alan Sugar’s criterion of being mature; another straw in the wind is that Amstrad had the option to take up Sir Clive Sinclair’s Z88 lap-top and decided against, suggesting either that it thought full IBM-compatibility essential – or simply didn’t think that the market was worthwhile.
