By CBR Staff Writer

An increasing number of people in the US are planning to replace their old TV with an Internet-connected smart TV.

Relaxnews said, citing a report by market researcher Parks Associates, the number of Americans planning to purchase a smart TV has nearly doubled in less than a year.

The report said that over this year, over 10% of US households with a broadband Internet connection intend to buy a smart TV during the second half, an increase of 4% from the first half of the year.

According to DigiTimes, worldwide smart TV shipments are expected to double in 2012, reaching 52.85 million units and 20% of the market.

The report said that Smart TV is set to witness a phase of rapid growth in 2011-2012 as the number of applications, previously designed for mobile devices, are increasingly incorporated into the Smart TV.

According to the Taiwan-based Topology Research Institute (TRI), worldwide shipments of smart TV is estimated to grow to 25.18 million units in 2011 from 7.04 million units in 2010. TRI said that Smart TV is also expected to account for 10.4% of the overall TV market this year.
