TV to Giant iPad: 5 tech predictions for Apple’s September event

What's in store for the mysterious September 9 event?

By Alexander Sword

The Apple event in September is now a firm fixture of the Autumn season, and the annual cranking up of the rumour mill in the preceding weeks is fast becoming one as well. Here are some of the most likely announcements for Apple’s event on 9 September.

1. iPhone 6S

In general, Apple tends to launch new generations of the iPhone every two years, meaning that the iPhone 7 isn’t due until 2016. The expanded additions to the iPhone 6 line, generally being referred to as the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, should feature a range of upgrades in power and features.

They may also feature the Force Touch technology pioneered on the Apple Watch, which allows users to control gestures through applying different levels of pressure.

2. iOS 9

iOS 8 was released last September alongside the iPhone 6, so a launch on 9 September for the new operating system is likely. Recent updates to the beta include Wi-fi Calling and Wi-Fi Assist, which automatically opts out of low-quality wi-fi connections when cellular service is better.

Apple has already announced the addition of a News app to the Home Screen, collating relevant updates on your phone, as well as updates to Notes, Maps and SIRI.

3. Apple TV

Apple TV has often been seen as a disappointment, so a renewed effort in the consumer television space may come as a surprise. However, according to the New York Times, insiders say that a new game-focused version of the product is set for launch.

Apple‘s pedigree in the games market has generally been in catering to casual gamers, so a Wii-type device is probably more likely than an Xbox or PlayStation rival. The new Apple TV is also expected to be open to developers.

4. iPads

Also prominent in the rumour mill is the launch of new iPads, including an update to the iPad mini series and a new iPad Pro, expected to be a larger offering than the usual iPad at between 12 and 13 inches.

The new tablet is also expected to complement the larger display with enhanced audio quality through better speakers.

5. Apple Watch ‘updates’

Although no new major software or hardware updates of the Apple Watch are expected, considering it has only been on the market a matter of months, Apple is expected to add new watchbands in several colours.

There have also been rumours, reported in the New York Times, that a new, cheaper gold Apple Watch might be slated for a launch.
