Given the market for database software has slowed considerably in recent months it’s not surprising, Sybase Inc says, that it’s focusing on big potential growth areas such as middleware (CI No 3,279), with its PowerJ Java environment, Jaguar CTS transaction server and Java-enabled Adaptive Server products. It’s also an area in which Sybase thinks its partnering strategy is more advantageous than IBM, Oracle and Microsoft. Sybase point to success its Adaptive Server Anywhere has garnered. It is the basis for Siebel’s Sales Enterprise sales force automation software and is also use by Scopus, Vantive and the EDS Renascence project plus other accounting and financial software packages. Sybase says its product strategy is organized around database (Server, IQ and Mobile); database-independent middleware; and tools and Java. Its vertical market focus is on finance, banking, insurance and telecommunications industries. Horizontal solutions are offered for help desk, customer asset management, call center and sales force automation; data marts/warehouses; electronic commerce; human resource management systems and enterprise resource planning.
