As part of the deal, Nominum’s DNS and DHCP software has been optimized for Sun’s Solaris 10 Unix operating system, said Tom Tovar, Nominum VP of sales and business development.
Carriers increasingly require better-performing DNS infrastructure, as they upgrade and add more IP services, including VoIP and video-over-IP, Tovar said.
More real-time applications are being delivered over IP networks, which strains DNS infrastructure, he said. Typically, the way people have tried to solve this in the past is use underperforming hardware with open-source DNS software . . . but that combination doesn’t work.
Tovar said the open-source software often is not designed to scale and the system will lack performance.
But by bundling in Nominum’s hardware, Sun’s latest hardware platform, based on its SPARC processors, has shown in benchmark tests to have twice the performance of a standard Intel-based or white-labeled Linux box, said Sun executive director of partner and industry marketing Andy Sheldon.
And the combo uses just 59% of power of a comparable Intel-based Linux system, he said.
Sun chose to partner with Nominum in response to customer’s needs for a high-performance DNS system that was also scalable, Sheldon said.

While the deal is not exclusive, Sheldon said Nominum is the only DNS software company it has a reseller partnership with.
Nominum Foundation Caching Name Server and Authoritative Name Server for DNS on Sun Fire V20z and V40z servers will be offered. Customers won’t get a price break for buying the bundle, but they will benefit from the companies’ support services in doing so, Tovar said.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Both companies will be selling the bundle.
