UK is prime target for spammers

Trojans were the most used viruses by attackers.

By CBR Staff Writer

The UK remained the number one target of spammers in August with most number of malicious attachments received through mails.

About 13.2% of all spam detections were found from the mails sent to the UK which was 6.3% points above the number of spam mails received by users in July.

The UK was followed by Germany with 9.6% and the US with 7.7%, according to analysis from Kaspersky.

The US was the number one source of spam with 16% of all spam sent, followed by Russia with 6% of all spam sent and China with 4.7%.

Australia was ahead of the UK when it came to phishing attacks, with 24.4% of all phishing attacks targeted towards the country, followed by Brazil with 19.5%.

In August, most of the malicious files were distributed via mail traffic disguised as fake court summons which contained the Kuluoz Trojan, designed to download and launch other malware.

The attackers also used Facebook notifications which asked users to secure their accounts by install the utility attached along with messages which actually contained the Haze Trojan-downloader.

Kaspersky Lab Antispam Analyst Tatyana Shcherbakova said: "In August, we recorded a significant 62% increase in the number of phishing attacks. This is probably due to a seasonal decline in the demand for advertising spam.

"To avoid becoming a victim, remember these simple rules: check the sender address and be particularly careful with messages containing attachments. It’s better to contact the company directly than trust an email and lose your personal data."
