Mobile Commerce offers retailers the chance to make big money during holidays

Figures suggest mobile payment is getting more popular

By Tineka Smith

As Cyber Monday, the biggest day of online shopping in the US, has finished, a new trend in online shopping has become more apparent.

Figures released by the Centre of Retail Research showed a growing trend in mobile payment popularity and that over one in ten online shoppers will purchase gifts through a mobile phone.

This marks the first year in which mobile payments have gone mainstream and retailers may want to consider investing in mobile commerce to take advantage of the estimated 12% in mobile purchases of the £13.4bn Britons will spend in cyber shops this Christmas.

Mobile Commerce is the capability of conducting commerce through mobile devices, such as a smartphone, mobile phone, or mobile equipment.

The director of product management at Stibo Systems, Simon Walker, says it is important for retailers investing in mobile websites to be aware of the user-friendly quality of their mobile websites.

"Over the last 12 months, people have got a lot more trusting when it comes to shopping on their mobile phones. Research from Stibo Systems found that only 27 % of consumers were satisfied with their mobile retail experience."

Satisfaction with mobile websites is still low and retailers can improve chances of seeing positive return on mobile commerce investment by providing simple and easy to navigate websites or transactional shopping applications.

"The retail websites with the most detailed product information, such as images, videos, specifications etc will no doubt be the ones seeing most purchases. A great mobile store, filled with detailed product information and rich content will hold a retailer in good stead to get their slice of the £13.4bn," added Walker.
