Durham Constabulary stops cross-border criminals with video analytics

Federal Signal's system includes automated number plate reading cameras

By CBR Staff Writer

The Durham Constabulary has deployed a Federal Signal digital video and analytics system with advanced automated number/licence plate reading technology to protect its community from cross-border criminals.

The Durham Constabulary serves a population of more than 595,000 residents in County Durham in England’s north-east region.

The Federal Signal digital video and analytics system features Federal Signal Spike+ automated number plate reading (ANPR) cameras by PIPS, which are situated on key roadways in Durham County.

Number plates of all the passing vehicles are compared with the Police National Computer (PNC) database. Any known or suspected criminal vehicles are monitored and their location checked if a crime is committed while they are in the county.

Paul Negus, managing director, PIPS Technology business unit of Federal Signal Corporation said: The Federal Signal Spike+ camera is suitable for this type of digital video and analytics deployment, as it integrates illumination, cameras and processor in one rugged system to provide savings in system cost, complexity and timescales.

Federal Signal, headquartered in Oak Brook, is a designer and manufacturer of products and services that serve municipal, governmental, industrial and institutional customers. It operates in three groups: safety and security systems, environmental solutions and fire rescue.
