Airbus’ smart luggage can find itself when lost

It uses a GPS tracking system that can transmit location using a smartphone app

By CBR Staff Writer

Airbus has showcased a concept of smart luggage called Bag2Go, which can send an alert to the owner if the baggage is lost.

The luggage features GPS tracking chips that can transmit their location to the owners via a smartphone app.

Bag2Go smart baggage has been developed in a joint initiative between Airbus and T-System along with luggage manufacturer Rimowa.

These bags feature self-service check-ins, a scale to weigh the content and equipped for real-time tracking and self-service drop off at the airport.

Airbus chief innovation officer, Yann Barbaux, said: "At Bag2Go also will offer benefits for airlines as well, including reduced operating costs and turnaround time, fewer lost bags, and an entirely online check-in for customers."

AT&T also introduced a similar concept previously involving GPS tracking attachable tags, which could be built into a suitcase directly as well.

The ultimate goal of this project is to work with the airlines IT system, contacting the carriers and get the luggage delivered to the owner’s hotel.
