Social media networks including Twitter and Facebook, among several others, reported a huge surge in social media activity during the 2013 Wimbledon tournament.
Over the course of the championships, Twitter reported more than 6.6 million tweets about Wimbledon, surpassing the 2.5 million figure recorded during the tournament in 2012.
Facebook reported more than 20 million posts, comments and ‘likes’ associated with the tournament, with Google recording over two million searches for competition winner Andy Murray.
During the two-week tennis championships, the Facebook profile of Murray’s rival Novak Djokovic was ‘liked’ by 3.1 million people, which was three times as many as Murray.
According to the UK mobile phone provider EE, there was a 39% rise in traffic on its 4G service over the course of the men’s final on July 7, 2013.
Twitter reported that Murray’s victorious tweet: "Can’t believe what’s just happened!!!!" was re-tweeted for over 77,000 times within an hour.
Women`s finalists also witnessed the same trend with champion Marion Bartoli attracting 18,412 likes for her official page and Sabine Lisicki gathered 290,000.
Reports claim that some sports websites tried hard to stay abreast of the demand for information regarding the championship.
