Paul Jacobs, Qualcomm’s chief executive, is reported to have said that it was in his company’s interest to make chips for DVB-H, a television standard for mobile phones that the company’s competitors use, because the success of this standard could help promote the uptake of mobile TV in general.
Qualcomm, which sells technology, licenses and chips, is said to be continuing the development of its MediaFlo wireless technology, investing a massive $800 million in creating a network based on the technology in the US.
Competition is heating up between service providers worldwide, but Qualcomm’s logic is simple. The company continues to develop its own technology but ensures it does not lose out to competitors whilst also contributing to the overall advancement of mobile television.
