PHILIPS LAUNCHES ‘PC INTO TV’ HOME ENTERTAINMENT BOXES

By CBR Staff Writer

Philips Electronics NV announced two digital home entertainment devices aimed at integrating personal computer capabilities into televisionsat the IFA show in Berlin. The DVX8000 is a digital home cinema device aimed at the US market. It offers high-end video capabilities including a television tuner, video line doubler, DVD player for DVD-Movies, DVD-ROM, CD-ROM and CD Audio. Audio capabilities include an FM tuner and a Marantz-designed pre-amplifier. A wireless keyboard and a Marantz RC2000 remote control are also included. Internet browsing and plug-ins are also provided for on-line access. Personal computer functionality is based on a 233MHz Intel Pentium MMX processor, a Trident 3D graphics accelerator, 4Mb of video memory and 32Mb of RAM. It will be available in the US in October for $5,000 and versions suitable for selected European countries will be out by the middle of 1998. The second device, Ponte, is a more competitively-priced all-in-one unit for families that will initially be marketed in Asia and Germany for $1,500. Features include MPEG Full Motion Video for games and movies; 3D Surround Sound for 16-bit audio; and internet access via a built-in 33.6Kbps modem or ISDN terminal adapter. A TV-style remote control and an infrared-based wireless keyboard mean users can switch between television, compact disk, internet and games applications. The products are the result of research that suggests consumers are increasingly demanding more integration of digital audio, video, communication and computer technologies.
