PATRIOT WINS GENROCO FOR PSC1000 CHIP WITH MORE TO COME

By CBR Staff Writer

Patriot Scientific Corp , the small San Jose chip maker with a Java chip story waiting in the wings, has won Genroco Inc as a licensee of its 32-bit PSC1000 ShBoom microprocessor, the one it is porting Java to. Genroco, a supplier of high performance storage and network interfaces will put the ShBoom in its TurboFire PCI Fibre Channel Controller and then more than 20 other controllers by mid-1998. Genroco says it will enable it to execute firmware instructions more than 20 times faster than before. There was no word from Patriot on how many units this deal would represent, but we hear there should be a similar announcement again today and another in a few days time. Patriot says it beat off Digital Equipment Corp’s StrongARM and Intel Corp i960 processor to win the contract. Genroco said the PSC1000 beat real time code running on a 500MHz DEC Alpha chip in most applications. The news should boost the company’s lowly share price, which has been driven down over the last couple of months by employees of MetaComp Inc, the company Patriot bought last November selling their stock when the restriction period on the Patriot shares ended. The estate of company founder Helmut Falk also diluted some of its 30% or so stake, but retaining around 28%. Patriot is supposed to be demonstrating the Java version of the PSC1000 on September 29 in San Jose.
