Oracle Corp’s set to announce the availability of its Very Large Memory (VLM) option on Windows NT 4.0 running on Digital Equipment Corp AlphaServers next week. VLM essentially enables a database to run very quickly by loading the entire data set into a gigantic store of RAM. Oracle says VLM lifts the current 2Gb memory constraint imposed on applications running on NT. With VLM, Oracle can cache almost 8Gb of database information in memory. DEC’s AlphaServer 4100 mid-range systems can accommodate up to 8Gb RAM. NT coming soon to the higher-end AlphaServer 8200 and 8400 (TurboLaser) systems. Oracle VLM doesn’t require the upcoming Windows NT 4.0 Server Enterprise Edition upgrade or Windows NT 5.0. VLM with Oracle8 Enterprise Edition on AlphaServers running NT will be available in September at no additional charge.
